Millennials, Strive for that Perfect Selfie because You will Never get out of Debt and You Will Never own Your Own Home Responsibly

“The more he identifies with the dominant images of need, the less he understands his own life and his own desires. The spectacle’s estrangement from the acting subject is expressed by the fact that the individual’s gestures are no longer his own; they are the gestures of someone else who represents them to him.”
― Guy DebordThe Society of the Spectacle

“The spectacle is the nightmare of imprisoned modern society which ultimately expresses nothing more than its desire to sleep. The spectacle is the guardian of sleep.”

The headline you just read is what I think to myself when I realize I shouldn’t spend money and should save for my future interests, especially when my contemporaries scroll social media and see how others are living large and in charge and strive to be just like them.

(Firstly, social media is an affirmation to spend more money, and waste more time.  Do you have it in you?)

I am pretty sure the people around me are concerned about my one point of obsession, my now goal: paying off all of my debt. My motivation being: Because I am a slave to debtors, credit card companies own me, my student loans own me, I really don’t exist freely…  What keeps me going in this direction:  Good reasons.

Good reasons:  Some day I will own my own house, responsibly–not through some insane mortgage.  Some day I will be out of debt, entirely: zero debt.  Some day I won’t have to work every day to pay my bills, no worries.  I will retire with dignity.  And again, those around me will benefit from my now goals, from my relatively insane efforts, from sacrifices I make.

These sacrifices are easier than the alternative for me, of living in debt for the rest of my life, chipping away at what I one minimum payment, all that high interest at a time.  That is stupid.  That is something that could use distractions!

It’s hard and easy for me to imagine that there is a world out there stranded glaring into their phones at millions of other people acting out their fantasies–Millennials et al., taking photos, images of a luxury lifestyle that is nothing more than made up. IT DOES NOT EXIST.

Imagine if we could get paid for that time spent glaring at other people’s dreams… We’d all be as rich as Hillary Clinton, Jimmy Buffet, Steve Jobs, or Donald Trump.

I really shouldn’t care about the setting or the background or how long it took for another person to get that perfect photo, the perfect selfie, and all those likes, although it worries me. I care, imagine.  That is my philanthropy for the day: caring.

(Your debt is that train in the “perfect selfie” video above, maybe doing the same to you as you read.  Stay off of those tracks that lead you, or the future you, into imminent danger.)

The first thing I think about when I see pictures of people doing AMAZING things is, how much debt does that person actually have, credit cards, student loans, etc.? I know, it’s none of my business, but for science…  Then I wonder, does all that debt add up to contrived happiness, the happiness in that picture, imagines on a screen, unfocused a distracted ephemera of fleeting feeling… Does it come from that?

(A hobby of imagining your existence is entirely different from what it is?  Doing this doesn’t cause change, it avoids it.)

And we compare ourselves to those counterfeit images, those freewheeling fantasies, those nice narrative and salacious story lines… Am I as good as that other person’s selfie?  No, no, I am not… Should I be spending more money, should I be buying into this false pretense?  Do I give a shit?

Then I vanish from social media and that apathetic society that we all pay to join in some way or another. I vanish because we all should and walk back into the deep woods to find our inner animal selves, or into a deep sleep.  Beasts called gentlemen in suits and ties pretending to be anything other than ourselves.

(When we die our Facebook us’s keep on living.  Is that me?  For example, my father died four years ago in June and he unfriended me on Facebook a couple of years after that.  He is virtually still alive, however he is physically dead.  I don’t know if he sleeps anymore.  I cannot visit his grave because my reality does not understand this sort of paradox.  Social media creates dead and living zombies right now.  Imagine.)

So, yes, back to the beginning, you will never get out of debt or own your own home, responsibly–without insane lenders and bad deals, if you keep this up.  That is what I tell myself and then avoiding those distractions becomes very easy for me. You as in me.

Forget your likes, upvotes, retweets, highlights from whatever years ago, virtual memories, Facebook lives, and other people’s selfies, they evoke no artistic value whatsoever (or maybe they do: this mini-essay tho.).  Think about what you owe that credit card company, what you owe in student loans? Try to smile now, make that art, Picasso. Get that photo sing.  Real good job.  Create those American Dreams.

We cancelled our #Netflix because you can get most things for free at the #library

I wonder if people know they can get most things for free at the library, even an original series on Netflix… I told my colleague this just before lunch hour yesterday. He seemed surprised. Was I lying, was I crazy, could a person really do this? Ah, yes. To the latter that is. Here’s how I know. Before mentoring last week I was at the public library and saw on the hold shelf: Stranger Things (both seasons). SO, that was what did it for me. Yeah, I could be sad about not getting Netflix exclusives any more, but now I know I can get them at the public library for the cost of having a library card: free. This should be no surprise society, and it was a surprise to me. Again, you can get most things at the library for free if you know what you are looking for, how to ask for it, and who to ask. Everyone wants to help you. Do you want to save money and help yourself? Get it at the library.

Less is More, so many generalizations

Recently, I have come under the idea that less is more. I’ve been reading Walden on Wheels. I have been seeing that what I have, too much, is very too much. I want out of it. I say now, less is more, less is more. This is so true.

This realization started after reading The Millionaire Nextdoor, a book about being frugal. A book about just living with less, not overspending, and living on the means that you have, and becoming a millionaire.

I set new goals because of it. I want nothing. I want to have nothing but liquid security in wealth. The lesson I learned is be prepared for anything and don’t live beyond your means. Keep an even keel. Sail your boat and don’t sink.

Yes, I do believe less is more… So I give you less words. But I must admit it. I am starting to like the idea of having less and feeling it more. As Dave Ramsey says (I have been listening to his podcast) “Live like no one else and you can live like no one else.”

I am ready to live like no one else. Have been for some time. I always felt like a nonconformist. Now I can prove it in actions. No more too much. No more overspending. We all owe it to ourselves to get ourselves right first. Then we can help everyone else. But only then.

BREAKING: Flynn tells all, admits that fake news told him that fake news is fake news, the internet turns to complete bedlam after not reading the article in its entirety

_95401498_037887586_reut

Michael Flynn just after learning fake news is fake news, told by fake news.

Today, in a revelation that shocked absolutely no one at all, Michael Flynn was told by fake news sources that fake news sources were actually fake news sources, paid by people of interest to report on specific topics, offering no further comment other than “don’t tell anyone, Michael Flynn…” extremely reliable sources say.

This fake news comes as no surprise to people with eyes and a brain that functions properly, especially when there are more witch hunts today than there was in The Crucible, and while there are more red scares now than there were in the 1960s.  Although it does give a point of reference to anyone making a point that will be “fact-check”ed as false without proof in light conversation.

Moreover, in a shocking twist, no one cared about this admittance and critics focused all of their attention on Michael Flynn himself, expressing that he was fake news, or a liar, or he was biased because he wasn’t a Clinton supporter like them. The world went on blathering about what it thought was right and wrong, and how the grass is blue and the sky is green. All parties will continue to loathe one another and fake news will run rampant.

Hot and Cold Medium: How to Turn Your Phone Off in Class!

Sometimes (this happened today, but I have other examples) when I sit in class, or at home, or in church (which doesn’t happen), or in the living room at my ma’s house is Southeastern Minnesota, or at the St. Paul campus libraries, I’ll be focusing on something other than what I am supposed to be focusing on (real-life)…

Essentially I’ll be daydreaming, and then right when I am at the most relaxed part of that unconscious illusion–near a meditative climax, almost to the point of sheer pleasure, that moment will be completely destroyed by someone’s cellphone ringing, or vibrating, or notifying them that they need to feed the monster that is constant interconnectedness…

Then I awakened, and know that I am truly in reality, and that nothing is so serene and peaceful and unrealistic as that static calm unconscious buzzing world stolen away by modern technology.

I am pretty sure this is a cold medium, but since I cannot respond for/to said media communication it may be hot…

ALS water dumping blamed for California Drought

Los Angeles Times- Amid California’s drought, many wildfires but no disasters — yet

Los Angeles Times- Western drought causes Earth’s surface to rise as water levels drop

After the recent ALS water dumping sensation California’s droughts have hit an all-time high, and made-up people of little consequence say ‘there is no end in sight’.  Evidence shows a direct correlation between these two events; ALS water dumping and Californian Droughts.  Currently, millions of super-famous, and generally regular-average-boring, Americans have taken to dumping buckets of water over their heads.  For years California has been promoting the prospect of buying and living where there is no water, and the ALS movement is the last straw in breaking the camels back that brought water to these individuals.  Ever since this ALS sensation took viral, water has been impossible to find, not only in Californian desert lands, but in Californian lands which aren’t described as deserts but actually are.  Unbeknownst to those wasting water in the Midwest, or in other celebrity dense cities, lacking water is possibly worse than having Lou Gehrig’s disease, and much more important.

Why is this happening you ask, because humans need water to drink, to survive, to put out fires, and to feed the plants, animals, and babies that they grow.  Without water we will eventually dry up and turn into beef jerky, or dust!  What the ALS doesn’t know is that water is essential to life, in general.  They don’t believe water is important, at all.  The ALS has taken to the streets, and to social media, to promote such atrocities as water dumping…  Sounds familiar you say, well that’s because water dumping is the not-so-distant second cousin of water boarding

The ALS completely hates water and what it does for humans, plants, and the earth (as a whole).  This is an excerpt from the ALS website:

“The ALS Association is the only national not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. As the preeminent ALS organization, The Association leads the way in research, patient and community services, public education, and advocacy — giving help and hope to those facing the disease.  The Association’s nationwide network of chapters provides comprehensive patient services and support to the ALS community. The mission of The ALS Association is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.”

ALS stands for Anti Lake Society, plain and simple.  This means the organization does not like lakes, or lake water i.e. fresh water; lakes are made of water, and space.  Moreover, Catholics and the Government have sanctioned those within their ranks to abstain from the practice- if that doesn’t say something, I don’t know (this is a good thing)…  Apparently the ALS also promotes stem cell research, which is completely illegal if you believe in God, the all mighty, and that blood is made out of wine, and that people can walk on water and magically create fish.  It’s bunny-rabbits motherfucker, not fish.  –Amateur magicians (ha, ha)…  Also, the government doesn’t want politicians promoting stem cell research, because that would just be too difficult to explain to religious voters.

All in all, the ALS comes across as innocuous, and as standing for something beneficial, however the idea of wasting water to send a message seems to do more harm than good.  Are we more excited about getting cold and wet and seen on video, or about giving money to benign researchers?  Human beings should back research that leads to cures, medications (useful ones), and understanding, but they should also be mindful of their wastefulness.  California is burning, and the ALS is busy collecting money for this type of promotion; dosing individuals with water, and spreading the word like wildfire- pun intended.  Have we become so vain that we can’t see our own demise in front of us?  Water is a limited resource, whether wasting it for the promotion of an important and positive message, or not.  I got an idea, why don’t we promote using water responsibly, turning off the facet, recycling and picking up trash.   I nominate you.
